Insecurity: Plateau govt shuts down schools, ,

The Plateau state government has ordered all schools to close following increased attacks and threats by gunmen targeting learning centres in the North-West.

The spokesperson of the state SUBEB board, Richard Jonah, announced that secondary schools will shut from Saturday, November 22, while primary schools and day/boarding schools will close from Monday, November 24.

He described the move as temporary but necessary, saying it is “to prevent possible attacks and ensure public safety.”

The development comes after recent abductions of secondary school students in Kebbi and Niger, incidents that have heightened fear among residents and authorities across the North.

Recall that the Katsina Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Yusuf Jibia, earlier announced a similar measure.

He said the decision was taken “to protect the lives of students and teachers” while the state rolls out a new school security plan.

He added that even schools currently writing examinations must close, “until security checks are completed in identified high-risk areas.”
