Career sessions: Nigerian youth launches campaign to raise 1,000 volunteer hours for student,
By Chioma Obinna
A young Nigerian, Truth Osumareton Egbe, has launched #Project1000CareerSessions, a national campaign to raise 1,000 volunteer hours from professionals to support students and recent graduates seeking safe, judgment‑free career guidance.
The initiative responds to growing concerns that young Nigerians lack trusted spaces to discuss their career plans. Recent online debates have shown that students fear speaking to lecturers due to vulnerability being exploited, while young employees hesitate to seek guidance from employers who may prioritise organisational interests over their personal growth. At the same time, the rise of paid mentorship programmes has made career support inaccessible for many.
Egbe is calling on professionals, lecturers, employers, and policymakers to help create practical, accessible career‑support systems for young Nigerians. She is also urging the government to integrate career coaching and career education into university curricula and the NYSC programme, so students can speak openly about their career plans without fear or bias. She notes that when young people receive the right guidance early, they are more likely to make informed decisions, build meaningful careers, and contribute more effectively to national development.
The response to the campaign has been immediate. Within hours of opening the volunteer form, the project raised 100 hours, and within days, over 200 hours from professionals across medicine, diplomacy, tech, law, communications and other fields. The student booking form has also received responses from about 15 states across Nigeria, signalling a nationwide need for accessible, unbiased career conversations.
Speaking on what inspired the initiative, Egbe said: “I had the privilege of speaking with professionals who helped me understand my options when I was starting out. I realised many young Nigerians do not have that access and I wanted to create a simple way for others to experience the same support.”
Students are matched with professionals working in the fields they aspire to enter, and those who are unsure of their path are paired with someone who once felt the same way and successfully navigated life after school.
Egbe said the campaign is still ongoing, with a goal to match 1,000 students with 1,000 professionals in their fields by April 2026. She is actively seeking professionals willing to volunteer ONE hour to speak with a student, as well as students and recent graduates who would like to speak with someone for ONE hour about their career plans.
