WHX returns to Lagos as healthcare investment surges across West Africa,

    By Chioma Obinna

West Africa’s healthcare sector is gaining fresh momentum as investment flows, policy reforms, and regional trade opportunities converge, with the return of the World Health Expo Lagos 2026 set to anchor new partnerships and accelerate growth.
Nigeria, the region’s largest healthcare market, is at the centre of this shift. Industry projections indicate the sector will expand by 7.1 percent, reaching an estimated value of 161.7 million dollars by 2027. The growth is being driven by a 1.2 billion dollar federal government investment targeting infrastructure upgrades and workforce development, alongside major oncology and diagnostic expansions led by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority.
At the same time, regional integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area is easing the movement of medical goods and services, opening up new pathways for imports, partnerships, and scale.
Yet, the opportunities sit alongside persistent challenges. An estimated 70 percent of Nigerians still fund healthcare out of pocket, highlighting gaps in financial protection and access. With a rapidly growing and youthful population projected to hit 250 million, pressure on both primary and specialist care continues to rise.
Across West Africa, similar trends are unfolding. Nigeria’s medical device market remains the largest in the subregion, projected to grow from 414.8 million dollars in 2025 to over 632 million dollars by 2030. Other countries including Ghana, Senegal, Cameroon and Ivory Coast are also recording steady expansion, driven by hospital modernisation, digital diagnostics, and gradual progress toward universal health coverage.
It is within this context that WHX returns to the Landmark Centre from June 2 to 4, bringing together more than 500 exhibitors, over 8,000 professional visitors from 40 countries, and dozens of global health leaders.
Stakeholders say the event is more than a showcase. It is a platform for shaping the future of healthcare delivery in the region.
Speaking on the development, the President of the Healthcare Federation of Nigeria, Njide Ndili said: “As partners with WHX, we are excited to drive market access dialogue that aligns with national health goals and promotes regional trade.
“Leadership lies at the heart of healthcare transformation. The shift from care to capability is key to the long-term success of healthcare institutions. To truly transform healthcare in Nigeria and across Africa, these efforts must be scaled, and WHX provides the platform to connect stakeholders, share best practices, and deploy proven solutions.”
This year’s edition introduces a tighter, trade-focused agenda built around leadership forums designed to deliver practical outcomes. Discussions will centre on market access, regulatory alignment, investment, and diagnostics, all critical pillars for strengthening health systems.
The Healthcare Market Access and Policy Leadership Forum will explore regulatory harmonisation and AfCFTA opportunities, while a hospital investment forum will examine financing and procurement strategies. A dedicated laboratory forum, organised in collaboration with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, will focus on advancing diagnostics capacity across the region.
Tom Coleman, Portfolio Director for Healthcare at Informa Markets said: “WHX is more than dialogue. It is where policy ambition becomes impactful collaboration. With Nigeria’s young population and dynamic neighbouring markets, WHX sits at the centre of efforts to drive investment in infrastructure, technology, and healthcare services.”
During the conference, the exhibition floor will feature cutting-edge medical technologies, an integrated laboratory zone with live demonstrations, and dedicated spaces for networking and deal-making. Organisers say these elements are designed to move conversations into concrete business outcomes.
The WHX platform, which also hosts events in Johannesburg and Nairobi, continues to connect global manufacturers with regional distributors, strengthening supply chains and improving access to modern healthcare solutions.
For many stakeholders, the return of WHX to Lagos is not just another industry event. It is a signal that the region’s healthcare transformation is gathering pace and that the next phase will be defined by execution, scale, and sustained collaboration.
