Tinubu Appoints Dr. Morufu Alausa New Minister of Education

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Dr. Morufu Olatunji Alausa, the former Minister of State for Health, as Nigeria’s new Minister of Education.

The announcement was made on Wednesday October 23, 2024.

Dr. Alausa, a distinguished medical doctor specializing in nephrology, boasts an impressive educational background. He studied Medicine and Surgery at the University of Lagos, graduating in 1993, and later completed his residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, where he served as Chief Medical Resident. His extensive experience in public service and administration positions him well to tackle the pressing challenges facing Nigeria’s education sector.

The appointment comes at a crucial time when Nigeria’s education system is contending with funding shortages, frequent strikes, and an urgent need for curriculum reforms.

Dr. Alausa’s previous leadership in the health sector, where he successfully spearheaded initiatives to enhance healthcare delivery, has raised expectations for his tenure in the education ministry.

Education stakeholders are expressing optimism about Dr. Alausa’s leadership.

“I hope that he will prioritize reforms aimed at improving the quality of education, ensuring access for all, and tackling infrastructural deficits in schools across Nigeria,” remarked Adewale Lawal, an education analyst.

Festus Gbenga further noted, “His transition into the education ministry is seen as a strategic move to leverage his administrative skills in revitalizing the sector.”

Dr. Alausa’s appointment follows the removal of Prof. Tahir Mamman, who faced controversy during his tenure, particularly regarding the introduction of an 18-year age limit for university admission seekers.

As the new minister steps into his role, there is uncertainty surrounding the implementation of a new curriculum for basic education, which is set to begin in January 2025.
