UI Celebrates 76th Convocation as Over 6,500 Graduates Receive First Degrees

The University of Ibadan (UI) kicked off its 76th convocation ceremony Wednesday, November 13, 2024, with grandeur at the International Conference Center (ICC).

This highly anticipated event witnessed the presence of eminent figures, including UI’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, along with notable academic leaders like Professor Wahab Egbewole, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin; Professor Ademola Adumola of Al-Hikmah University; Professor Noah Yusuf; and UI’s own Rector, Professor C. Chuka. Family members and supporters of the graduates also attended in droves, cheering on the new graduates.

The ceremony began with an introduction of the dignitaries by Professor Adenike Akinjobi, setting the stage for an inspiring address by UI’s Vice Chancellor. Addressing the graduates, Professor Adebowale highlighted the resilience needed to navigate the current challenging times.

“In the face of the unprecedented downturn being experienced, I believe that your journey in the University of Ibadan has honed you for the challenges out there,” he said.

Professor Adebowale also acknowledged the graduates’ dedication, urging them to value the knowledge and skills they’ve acquired as they transition into the next phase of their lives.

“We celebrate not only your academic accomplishments but your perseverance. You have earned your degree, but most importantly, you have gained knowledge and skills during the journey…. Nevertheless, remember that education is a foundation, not a destination,” he advised.

A total of 6,553 first-degree graduates, including those from the Distance Learning programme, will be awarded degrees during the convocation. Additionally, the institution will confer 111 diploma certificates, marking a milestone in UI’s commitment to academic excellence and lifelong learning.
