FUTA Professor, Matthew Adebayo, Wins 2024 Nigerian Science Prize for Water Treatment Research

Professor Matthew Ayorinde Adebayo, a senior researcher and Professor of Physical Chemistry at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has been named the winner of the prestigious 2024 Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) Gold Medal.

The announcement was made by Dr. Sonny Kuku, chairman of the NAS Science Prize Committee, and Dr. Oladoyin Okubanjo, the committee’s executive secretary, on Monday, November 25, 2024.

Awarded annually by NAS, the NAS Gold Medal recognizes Nigerian scientists whose research has substantial national relevance and global impact. Professor Adebayo earned this honor for his pioneering work in the conversion of biomass and other materials into adsorptive substances, which effectively remove pollutants from wastewater.

According to NAS, “The work of Professor Adebayo and his collaborators has significantly contributed to knowledge by providing relevant information for stakeholders and industries on the conversion of biomass and other materials into adsorptive materials for effective wastewater decontamination.”

NAS Statement and the Science Behind Adebayo’s Work

In an official statement, NAS expressed their pride in bestowing the 2024 NAS Gold Medal upon Professor Adebayo, describing him as an “astute researcher” with expertise in material science, water treatment, corrosion technology, and environmental chemistry. “Professor Adebayo’s research has focused on water treatment using adsorption, coagulation/flocculation, and photodegradation processes. He has researched widely on the development of low-cost green materials and composites for remediation of organic dyes from water,” the statement noted.

One of Adebayo’s groundbreaking contributions has been his innovative use of elephant grass biomass, converting it into biochars to remove nitrate ions from water—a critical solution given that nitrate contamination poses severe health risks. His team’s work has proven that biochar samples from this process effectively decontaminate wastewater, aiding stakeholders and industries in achieving cleaner water systems.

    Recognizing Excellence in Nigerian Science

The NAS Gold Medal award, established in 2016, alternates between Life and Physical Sciences each year. It includes a medal, a certificate, and a financial reward. The 2024 award is in the field of Physical Sciences, and Professor Adebayo will officially receive it during the Sixth NAS Annual Scientific Conference on January 22, 2025, in Abuja.

Founded in 1977, NAS is Nigeria’s leading independent scientific organization, dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and influencing national policy. The Academy’s mission emphasizes promoting science and technology to address key national challenges.

    FUTA Celebrates Adebayo’s Achievement

FUTA’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, lauded Professor Adebayo’s achievement, calling it a proud moment for the institution. “We are pleased that one of our faculty members has once again been named the winner of the prestigious NAS Gold Medal, which recognizes the contributions of scholars to the development of the sciences. Two years ago, two of our scholars were named as joint winners of the Nigerian Prize for Science. This further solidifies the place of FUTA as a leading citadel of academic excellence,” she said.

Professor Adebayo’s achievement stands as a testament to FUTA’s commitment to groundbreaking research that addresses societal issues and drives scientific and technological advancement in Nigeria.
