The Lagos State Government has shut down Smiley Kids Montessori School in Sangotedo following the tragic death of a two-year-old pupil, Rapheala Ogbodo, who drowned in the school’s swimming pool.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, has prompted an immediate investigation by the Lagos State Safety Commission and the Office of Education Quality Assurance under the Ministry of Education.

In a statement posted on its verified X handle on Saturday, the government expressed its deepest condolences to the family of the victim and reaffirmed its commitment to preventing such incidents in the future.

“The attention of the Lagos State Safety Commission has been drawn to the swimming pool accident that occurred at Smiley Kids Montessori, Heritage Place Estate, Sangotedo, Lagos, on Wednesday, 15th January 2025, which led to the death of a two-year-old female, Rapheala Ogbodo,” the statement read.

Officials from the Safety Commission and the Education Quality Assurance Office have visited the school to conduct a preliminary investigation into the cause of the tragic incident. The school will remain shut until investigations are completed and necessary measures are put in place.

Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, stressed the importance of adherence to safety regulations in schools. “All school owners and caregivers must comply with safety regulations to prevent accidents in the State,” Mojola stated.

The Lagos State Government assured residents of its commitment to ensuring the safety of all pupils and urged schools to strengthen their safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
