The AMIR Fund recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the African Church Grammar School, Abeokuta, to restore its prize-giving tradition several years after a lull.

The partnership marks a major boost for academic excellence in the school and expands the fund’s educational interventions across communities.

At a recent ceremony, outstanding students and a dedicated teacher were honoured with cash prizes and gifts in recognition of their exceptional performance and commitment. The initiative forms part of AMIR Fund’s growing outreach, which has supported 56 beneficiaries to date.

The Principal of African Church Grammar School, Mr Samson Adekunle, commended the revival of the awards, describing it as an important motivator for both students and teachers.

“This is a good way to encourage students and inspire teachers to continue striving for excellence,” he said.

Founder of AMIR Fund and alumnus of the school, Ridwan Sorunke, noted that bringing back the annual tradition held personal significance. He recalled the powerful impact the prize-giving culture had on students during his time at the school nearly two decades ago.

“When I discovered this ceremony had stopped, I felt something valuable was missing. That is why I wanted to help bring it back, because this tradition profoundly impacted my generation,” Sorunke said.

He reflected on how consistently “showing up, learning, and dreaming beyond his circumstances” shaped his journey from Afrogramms classrooms to building firms such as Dev-Afrique and Policy Vault and advising governments across Africa.

The renewed partnership, he noted, will further strengthen ties between the school and its distinguished former student, who now returns to invest in the community that shaped his early years.
