Kwara Government Demotes Teacher for Assaulting Corps Member, Pledges Zero Tolerance for Abuse

The Kwara State Government has demoted a teacher accused of assaulting a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member at Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin.

The teacher, identified as Hajia Fatimoh Hamzat Nike, was found guilty of misconduct by an investigative panel and has been demoted by two grade levels.

The decision was announced in a joint statement by the Commissioner of Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, and the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission, Mallam Bello Tauheed Abubakar.

“The investigative panel set up on the matter found Hajia Hamzat Fatimoh Nike guilty of fighting on duty, use of foul language, insubordination, and disrespect for the national identity which the uniform of the corps member represents,” the statement read.

The government emphasized that her actions violated public service rules, prompting her demotion. Additionally, she will be transferred out of her current school and required to attend counseling sessions.

Condemning the incident, the state government reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy for abuse.

“The government deeply regrets the action of the teacher and reassures the management of the National Youth Service Corps that the development does not represent the people of the state, and it will not happen again,” the statement added.

Teachers across the state were urged to remain law-abiding and adhere to professional ethics in performing their duties. The government also reiterated its commitment to providing training on teaching ethics and public service conduct.

The disciplinary action has been widely praised as a necessary step to ensure accountability and uphold the dignity of the NYSC program in the state.
