LASU Strengthens Global Ties with India

Lagos State University (LASU) has taken a significant step towards expanding its international collaborations as two high-profile delegations from India visited its main campus in Ojo on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.

The visit aimed to explore academic partnerships that would enhance internationalisation, research, and student exchange programmes.

The first delegation was led by Col. Dr. G. Thiruvasagam, Provost of the Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) University, Chennai, India, accompanied by Capt. V. Chandra Sekhar, Principal of AMET City College. The team met with LASU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, and other senior university officials.

During the meeting, Col. Thiruvasagam highlighted AMET’s status as one of India’s leading institutions, offering specialized courses in Marine, Mechanical, and Petroleum Engineering, as well as Shipping and Logistics, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Robotics.

“These diverse fields present numerous opportunities for collaboration between AMET and LASU, particularly in twin and joint degree programs, faculty and student exchanges, cultural interactions, and broader internationalisation initiatives,” he stated.

In response, Prof. Olatunji-Bello reaffirmed LASU’s commitment to global partnerships and encouraged AMET to submit a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) detailing specific areas of collaboration to formalize the engagement.

Shortly after, LASU hosted a second delegation from Donias Global Consultants, a private organization affiliated with India’s “Study in India” initiative. The five-member team was led by Diwesh Mishra, Director of the project, who outlined the initiative’s goal of strengthening academic ties between Nigerian and Indian tertiary institutions.

“The ‘Study in India’ programme aims to promote educational ties between Nigeria and India, facilitating student mobility, knowledge exchange, and capacity-building efforts,” Mishra explained.

Following detailed discussions, LASU and Donias Global Consultants agreed to pursue a formal MoU to establish collaboration frameworks, reinforcing educational ties between the two nations.

The engagement was facilitated by Prof. Olawale Lawal of LASU’s Department of History and International Studies, whose strong relationship with the Indian Consulate played a pivotal role in bringing the parties together.

With senior LASU officials in attendance, both visits underscored the university’s dedication to fostering international partnerships and expanding its global influence in higher education.
