Pharmacy law changes threaten public health, PSN warns Presidency,

    By Chioma Obinna

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, PSN, on Tuesday raised alarm over proposed changes to pharmacy legislation, warning that the amendments could undermine public health and disrupt professional regulation.

Speaking at the opening of the 2026 PSN Colloquium at the Banquet Hall, Yola, Adamawa State, PSN President Ibrahim Tanko Ayuba stressed the urgent need for an effective and independent Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, PCN, Governing Council. He said the council is crucial for maintaining professional oversight, enforcing discipline, and ensuring the safety and efficacy of pharmaceutical services across the country.

“The proposed amendments threaten the autonomy of pharmacy practice, and by extension, public health. “Pharmacy is the only health profession listed on the Exclusive Legislative List, and any interference in its regulation exposes Nigerians to unsafe practices and unlicensed operators,” Ayuba said.

He highlighted the historical foundation of pharmacy legislation in Nigeria, tracing regulatory authority back to 1878 and noting that the current Pharmacists Act of 1964 has guided professional autonomy for over six decades. According to him, disrupting this balance could result in increased proliferation of unregistered pharmaceutical premises, undermining Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP).

Ayuba called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Assembly to halt the amendment bills, citing ongoing court cases that should prevent legislative action. “The rule of law must guide any changes. Public health and patient safety cannot be compromised,” he said.

The PSN also used the occasion to commend Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for his contributions to healthcare in the state. Highlights include the implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), the establishment of a pharmacy consultancy cadre in the civil service, training programs for pharmacy technicians, and the launch of a state-of-the-art laboratory complex.

Governor Fintiri has also supported the PSN national conference and facilitated the development of health infrastructure across local government areas, including a modern infectious disease center, upgraded surgical theaters, a dialysis complex offering free services, and advanced obstetrics and gynecology facilities.

In addition, the PSN announced the launch of its Centenary Endowment Fund to promote pharmacy education and health-based research. The society plans to introduce the Umaru Fintiri Award for Innovation in Pharmacy Practice, with the maiden award expected at the 2027 Centenary Celebrations.

“Our collaboration with Governor Fintiri’s administration will set benchmarks for public health and pharmacy education.

“We remain committed to ensuring that professionalism and patient safety are not compromised at any level,” Ayuba said.
