
Police arrest 6 over alleged theft of solar street lights in Bayelsa,

Yenagoa—Operatives of the Bayelsa State Police Command have arrested six persons for their alleged involvement in the vandalism and theft of solar-powered street lights in parts of the state.
According to the police, the suspects, who were caught with stolen solar panels and iron-cutting equipment, are assisting in investigations to identify others involved in purchasing the stolen items.
The State Commissioner of Police, Francis Idu, speaking on the rising cases of vandalism and theft of solar street lights along the Elebele-AIT Road and other parts of Yenagoa, said the arrested suspects would soon be arraigned in court.
He also disclosed that the state government had assisted the command by procuring a high-powered, long-range security drone for day and night surveillance to reduce crime and criminality.
“Vandalism is sabotage. We have discovered that some criminal elements are venting their frustrations on solar light infrastructure that has sustained nightlife in the state. Those involved are being monitored and apprehended.
“Public infrastructure should not be tampered with or destroyed. It is an investment for the people,” he said.
On parading suspects, the Bayelsa CP called for a review of restrictions on the practice, saying: “We do not support the dehumanisation of suspects, but those arrested with evidence should be paraded as a deterrent to others contemplating such acts.”
