{"id":10418,"date":"2025-04-15T01:47:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-15T01:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/edumarkng.com\/news\/nelfund-how-tertiary-institutions-banks-rip-off-students-noa\/"},"modified":"2025-04-15T01:47:00","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T01:47:00","slug":"nelfund-how-tertiary-institutions-banks-rip-off-students-noa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/edumarkng.com\/news\/nelfund-how-tertiary-institutions-banks-rip-off-students-noa\/","title":{"rendered":"NELFUND: How tertiary institutions, banks rip off students \u2014 NOA"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanguardngr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/NELFUND-1024x540.webp\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"NELFUND: How tertiary institutions, banks rip off students \u2014 NOA\" title=\"NELFUND: How tertiary institutions, banks rip off students \u2014 NOA\" \/><\/div><p>NELFUND: How tertiary institutions, banks rip off students \u2014 NOA, <\/p>\n<p><strong>By Olasunkanmi Akoni<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The National Orientation Agency, NOA, has raised the alarm on how tertiary institutions and banks were conspiring to short-change students with disbursement of the Federal Government Student Loan Fund.<\/p>\n<p>Director General, NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, announced the findings after a meeting with NELFUND Managing Director, Mr Akintunde Sawyerr, weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Sawyerr had confirmed that some institutions were failing to inform students about loan disbursements made in their name while still requiring them to pay tuition fees.<\/p>\n<p>Issa-Onilu in his response, revealed: \u201cRecent investigations into the disbursement of the federal government student loan fund have uncovered several unethical practices by some institutions of higher learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the latest report by the Community Orientation and Mobilisation Officers, COMO, of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, schools and banks are conspiring to short-change the students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInitial reports indicated that certain university officials have been withholding vital information regarding loan disbursements, prompting immediate action from NELFUND.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe NOA\u2019s feedback shows how specific institutions have, in connivance with some banks, deliberately delayed payments to successful student applicants for personal financial benefit.\u00a0\u00a0 Some universities fail to acknowledge the NELFUND\u2019s disbursements to the students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecent findings by NELFUND have shown that some institutions have received student loan disbursements directly into their accounts yet neglect to inform the affected students or record the payments in their financial records, leading to unnecessary confusion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithholding critical financial information from students is not only unethical but also a breach of the principles on which NELFUND was founded.
