{"id":17248,"date":"2026-02-27T01:11:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T01:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/edumarkng.com\/news\/nigerias-7-million-disabled-children-deserve-better-access-to-education\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T01:11:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T01:11:07","slug":"nigerias-7-million-disabled-children-deserve-better-access-to-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/edumarkng.com\/news\/nigerias-7-million-disabled-children-deserve-better-access-to-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria\u2019s 7\u00a0Million\u00a0Disabled Children Deserve Better Access to Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria\u2019s 7\u00a0Million\u00a0Disabled Children Deserve Better Access to Education, <!-- no image -->,  <\/p>\n<div class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\"><\/div>\n<p><em>Jadesola Adedeji<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Just last December, the United Nations marked the\u00a0<strong><em>International Day of Persons with disabilities\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>reinforcing global commitment to disability inclusion in all aspects of social,\u00a0economic,\u00a0cultural and political life of people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Of the\u00a0roughly\u00a07 million children\u00a0in Nigeria\u00a0who\u00a0have a disability,\u00a095.5%\u00a0are\u00a0out of school due to multiple systemic barriers,\u00a0e.g. inaccessible schools, stigma, cultural biases are major factors and as such, only a very small fraction of\u00a0these\u00a0children are enrolled and attending school. Nigeria has the highest the number of out of school children in the world,\u00a010.5\u00a0million,\u00a0\u2014 a disproportionate number have\u00a0disabilities. These children are likely to never attend school compared to peers without disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>These staggering numbers are mostly invisible. In\u00a0too\u00a0many\u00a0African homes,\u00a0the\u00a0hidden\u00a0figures\u2013children and\u00a0adults\u00a0people with disabilities\u2013are shrouded in mystery\u00a0as\u00a0family secrets,hidden away\u00a0in the silence of shame and unspoken of. Growing up, I always thought my father was the only son of his mother\u00a0but\u00a0I discovered as an\u00a0adult,\u00a0that I had an uncle!<\/p>\n<p>I understand my\u00a0uncle was quite accomplished-\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0Nigerianstudent\u00a0in1950s America,\u00a0he\u00a0enrolled at\u00a0Lincoln University, aHBCU in Pennsylvania,\u00a0with notable\u00a0African\u00a0Alum\u00a0greats\u00a0such as Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and\u00a0Kwame\u00a0Nkrumah, the first\u00a0Prime\u00a0Minister\u00a0of Ghana\u00a0. He returned to Nigeria and became somewhat of an activist in the local politics. And then,\u00a0since his\u00a0psychological\u00a0disability\u00a0appeared in adulthood,\u00a0what happened next is hard to piece\u00a0together\u00a0but\u00a0I know he then spent the next 5 decades in an institution of sorts\u2013a hidden figure not spoken about.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0wonder how many\u00a0people with disabilities from that era were kept hidden and disappeared into the abyss of obscurity.\u00a0This\u00a0discriminatory exclusion of people with disabilities (PWDs) is still prevalent in the African\u00a0society\u00a0to this day.\u00a0PWDs\u00a0include people with any physical, intellectual,\u00a0developmental, sensory\u00a0or psychological disabilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I suppose\u00a0my\u00a0uncle\u00a0had\u00a0<em>short-lived success<\/em>\u00a0as a person with disability, who had access to formal education,\u00a0compared to the millions of children with disability who are excluded from education\u00a0across Nigeria, missing out on a full life, as well as being able to contribute to society instead of being a burden.<\/p>\n<p>To be sure,\u00a0SEN Educational facilities,\u00a0both government and private, like the Pacelli school for the Blind and Partially Sighted, Wesley School for the hearing impaired and other facilities catering for multiple disabilities do exist\u00a0in Nigeria. However,\u00a0these are sparse, urban centered and inadequately provide\u00a0for the millions of disabled children across the nation. In my opinion,\u00a0they\u00a0serve more as care centers as\u00a0opposed\u00a0to centers of learning where children are equipped with skills that foster\u00a0knowledge, independence\u00a0and hope for the future.\u00a0I contend that these facilities inadvertently enhance discrimination and segregation of children with disability further adding to an overall sense of \u201cunwholeness\u201d as a human<\/p>\n<p>In Lagos\u00a0where I live, a city of 21million with over 1 million children of school age,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/ark%3A\/48223\/pf0000373665?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>only 17 of 1,001<\/strong><strong>\u00a0public primary schools reportedly provide SEN services<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 a glaring access gap\u00a0with\u00a0many families still experiencing\u00a0discrimination and increased pressure to hide their\u00a0children living with disabilities. The pursuit of quality education translates into added financial constraints as parents from low resource communities do not possess the financial means to access private SEN schools with better facilities. Overall, children with disabilities are often deprived of quality education and\u00a0lack\u00a0skills to enter the labour market and more often than not, face a future of dependency on others, lack of independence and\u00a0lifelong\u00a0poverty and hardship.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore,\u00a0laws and policies\u00a0to\u00a0protect the rights children with disabilities\u00a0do\u00a0exist yet\u00a0are not\u00a0uniformly\u00a0enforced. The\u00a0Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018\u00a0mandates the right to education without discrimination and provision of free education till secondary school. In addition, Nigeria has a\u00a0National Policy on Inclusive Education\u00a0and a National Policy on Special Needs Education which aim to promote inclusive education, access and equity for learners with special needs. The problem is not the lack of laws and policies but a lack of enactment and implementation meant to protect and provide support for children with disabilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Our government must act beyond the laws and policies and ensure implementation\u00a0at scale, SEN training teacher training, infrastructure deficit, and availability of assistive assessment and learning tools\u00a0across all tiers of education to give these children a chance to\u00a0realize\u00a0their potential and human rights.The political will, interest,\u00a0and commitment to inclusive education as a whole must be become a reality.\u00a0Otherwise we continue deny the rights of people\u00a0with\u00a0disability as well as the opportunity to increase the actual human resource capacity in \u00a0Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>As a society, we must also commit to changes in our owndiscriminatory mindset and cultural biases\u00a0through awareness, acceptance, advocacy and giving a voice to the voiceless\u00a0and shinning a light to those dark, hidden spaces even in our own families.<\/p>\n<p>I learnt my\u00a0uncle lived long into his late 80s.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t even know his name.<\/p>\n<p>He still remains hidden\u2026\u00a0even in death.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>* Adedeji is the\u00a0<\/em><em>Co-Founder<\/em><em>\u00a0of STEM METS<\/em><em><\/em><em>, transforming education in Africa through experiential STEM learning for children to drive innovation, creativity and social mobility.
