{"id":18326,"date":"2026-04-19T00:39:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T00:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/edumarkng.com\/news\/lagos-doctors-protest-police-harassment-warn-of-health-crisis\/"},"modified":"2026-04-19T00:39:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T00:39:00","slug":"lagos-doctors-protest-police-harassment-warn-of-health-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/edumarkng.com\/news\/lagos-doctors-protest-police-harassment-warn-of-health-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Lagos doctors protest police harassment, warn of health crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanguardngr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-04-18-at-8.06.40-PM-1024x768.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Lagos doctors protest police harassment, warn of health crisis\" title=\"Lagos doctors protest police harassment, warn of health crisis\" \/><\/div><p>Lagos doctors protest police harassment, warn of health crisis, <\/p>\n<p>\u2026 Say arrests, intimidation threaten healthcare delivery<\/p>\n<p>By Chioma Obinna<\/p>\n<p>Medical doctors under the aegis of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Lagos State chapter, and the Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners, ANPMP, on Saturday in Lagos staged a rare joint protest, decrying what they described as \u201cpersistent harassment, intimidation and unlawful arrests\u201d by government agencies, particularly the police.<\/p>\n<p>The protesting doctors, who marched from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), to Police Command in Ikeja carried placards with inscriptions such as: \u201cNo to blame game,\u201d \u201cDoctors are not God to guarantee life,\u201d \u201cNo to vague medical negligence,\u201d \u201cDoctors are not criminals,\u201d \u201cNo to police harassment,\u201d and \u201cNo to doctors\u2019 abduction,\u201d among others.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing journalists during the protest rally tagged \u201cProtest Against Harassment of Doctors,\u201d ANPMP Lagos Chairman, Dr. Jonathan Esegie said the demonstration was both historic and necessary to avert a looming collapse in healthcare delivery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a gathering of historical importance because, in recent times, this has not happened,\u201d he said. \u201cLike the African proverb says, the rabbit does not run in the daytime unless something is pursuing it. Something is pursuing us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Esegie warned that the increasing harassment of doctors poses a \u201cpotent danger\u201d not only to the medical profession but to society at large.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, doctors are being \u201chounded at will, abducted from their practices, harassed, intimidated, maltreated and imprisoned without just cause,\u201d alleging that the police, particularly the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Lagos, are the worst offenders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey label doctors with offences without charges or trial. They act as accuser, prosecutor and judge at the same time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that some doctors have been forcibly taken from hospitals while attending to patients, leading to disruption of critical services and endangering lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have been instances where doctors are whisked away from patients and detained for days. While that happens, services are shut down and patients are denied care,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Esegie warned that the trend is pushing doctors into \u201cdefensive medicine,\u201d where fear of arrest discourages them from taking life-saving decisions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen faced with emergencies, a doctor may begin to hesitate, asking: \u2018If this goes wrong, will I be arrested and labelled a murderer?\u2019 That is dangerous for society,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that doctors are not infallible, noting that even under the best care, death can occur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not God. We can only care; only God guarantees life. Patients die everywhere in the world, even under the best medical care,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The ANPMP chairman insisted that only the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has the legal authority to investigate cases of alleged medical negligence, not the police.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking, Lagos State NMA Chairman, Dr. Babajide Saheed, condemned what he described as \u201cmulti-agency harassment\u201d of doctors, including actions by security agencies and trial by social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not happy. Doctors are being harassed by the police and other agencies, and even vilified on social media without proper investigation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He urged journalists to uphold professional ethics by verifying facts before publishing reports on alleged medical negligence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk questions, verify from doctors before going public. We are human beings, not devils,\u201d Saheed said.<\/p>\n<p>The protest was triggered by the recent detention of a doctor and a nurse in Lekki following the death of two critically ill children suffering from severe gastroenteritis.<\/p>\n<p>Esegie explained that the victims were brought in \u201cseverely dehydrated and septic,\u201d and despite medical efforts, both children died.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of due process, the doctor and nurse were detained for about a week. That is what jolted us into action,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The doctors warned that continued harassment could accelerate brain drain, with many young practitioners already seeking opportunities abroad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this does not stop, doctors will leave, and those who remain may withdraw from high-risk cases.
