Let me tell you about Chidi.<\/p>\n

Chidi works for a logistics company in Lagos. Last month, his manager sent him a quick message: \u201cWe need those containers moved to the warehouse by Friday.\u201d Simple enough, right? Chidi assumed his manager meant the company\u2019s main warehouse in Apapa. He organized the trucks, coordinated with the drivers, and moved fifteen containers across the city.<\/p>\n

Now for the good news: you can fix this. Today. Right now.<\/p>\n

I call it the 30-Second Rule. These simple practices take less than half a minute but can save you hours\u2014sometimes days\u2014of costly mistakes.<\/p>\n

Practice #1: Repeat back what you heard<\/p>\n

When your supervisor gives you instructions, don\u2019t just say \u201cOkay, noted.\u201d Instead, try this:<\/p>\n

\u201cSo if I understand correctly, you want me to submit the revised budget proposal to the finance department by Wednesday at 5 PM, and copy you on the email. Is that right?\u201d<\/p>\n

Those 30 seconds confirm you\u2019re on the same page. If you misunderstood something, you\u2019ll find out now\u2014not after you\u2019ve done the work incorrectly.<\/p>\n

Practice #2: Ask clarifying questions<\/p>\n

When someone says \u201cMake it more detailed,\u201d ask: \u201cCan you give me an example of what you mean by \u2018more detailed\u2019? Should I add more data points, or expand the explanations of existing points?\u201d<\/p>\n

When a lecturer says \u201cImprove your methodology section,\u201d ask: \u201cSpecifically, which aspects need improvement? Is it the sampling procedure, the data collection methods, or the analysis approach?\u201d<\/p>\n

Specific questions get specific answers. Specific answers prevent mistakes.<\/p>\n

Practice #3: Summarize key points at the end<\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re finishing a meeting, a phone call, or even reading an important email, take 30 seconds to summarize:<\/p>\n

\u201cJust to confirm, the three action items are: (1) I\u2019ll draft the proposal by Monday, (2) Tunde will review it by Wednesday, and (3) we\u2019ll submit it to the client by Friday. Did I capture everything?\u201d<\/p>\n

This simple summary catches misunderstandings before they become expensive problems.<\/p>\n

Practice #4: Pause before you act<\/p>\n

Before you start working on a task, pause. Ask yourself: \u201cAm I 100% clear on what\u2019s expected?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

If there\u2019s even a shadow of doubt, go back and clarify.<\/p>\n

That 30-second pause can save you from spending three hours doing the wrong thing.<\/p>\n

Make It Your Daily Habit<\/p>\n

I know what some of you are thinking: \u201cRuth, I don\u2019t have time for all this clarifying and confirming. I\u2019m too busy!\u201d<\/p>\n

But here\u2019s what I\u2019ve learned in my years of teaching and consulting: you don\u2019t have time NOT to do this.<\/p>\n

Think about it. Would you rather spend 30 seconds confirming instructions, or three hours redoing work you did incorrectly? Would you rather ask one clarifying question, or lose a client because you delivered the wrong thing?<\/p>\n

Clarity costs you nothing. Confusion costs you everything.<\/p>\n

Starting today, make this your communication habit:<\/p>\n

*When you receive instructions, repeat them back<\/p>\n

*When something is unclear, ask specific questions<\/p>\n

*When you finish a discussion, summarize the key points<\/p>\n

*Before you act, pause and confirm your understanding.<\/p>\n

These four practices will transform your communication at work, in school, and in every professional relationship you have.<\/p>\n

Remember Chidi and his N847,000 mistake? It could have been prevented with one simple question: \u201cWhich warehouse do you mean\u2014Apapa or Ikorodu?\u201d<\/p>\n

Thirty seconds. That\u2019s all it would have taken. Don\u2019t let assumptions cost you. Don\u2019t let vagueness derail you. Pause. Clarify. Confirm. Your future self\u2014and your bank account\u2014will thank you. Until next week, communicate with clarity.<\/p>\n
