Sometimes it dies quietly, under the cover of legality, procedure, and familiar political language. The constitution remains intact. Party offices remain open. Primaries are announced. Delegates assemble. Leaders speak solemnly of unity. Yet, behind the ceremony, the substance of democracy may already have been stolen. That is the danger now confronting Nigeria’s party politics, and Rivers State offers one of its most troubling examples.

At the centre of this crisis is the corruption of a noble word: consensus. Properly understood, consensus is not anti-democratic. A party may, after open consultation and honest negotiation, persuade aspirants to step down for a common cause. Such an arrangement can reduce bitterness and strengthen cohesion. But consensus becomes fraudulent when it is imposed from above, when aspirants are intimidated into withdrawal, when delegates are treated as hired hands, and when party members are invited only to applaud decisions already made elsewhere.

Consensus without consent is not unity. It is submission. It is elite capture dressed in democratic clothing.

This matters because democracy begins before the general election. By the time citizens arrive at the polling booth, the most decisive question may already have been settled: who was allowed to appear on the ballot? If governors, godfathers, party financiers, and national power brokers determine candidates through private bargains, then voters are not choosing from a genuinely democratic field. They are selecting from options pre-arranged by those who control the machinery of power.

Rivers State is not an ordinary case. It is economically vital, electorally important, and symbolically powerful. What happens in its politics echoes far beyond Port Harcourt. When candidate selection in such a state is shaped less by party members and more by elite negotiation, it sends a dangerous message to the country: membership does not guarantee voice; loyalty to patrons may matter more than loyalty to principle; and political ambition without elite blessing is almost futile.

This is how democracy is hollowed out from within. Elections may continue, but meaningful choice disappears. Parties may exist, but they become vehicles for private settlement. Primaries may be held, but their outcomes are known before votes are cast. The language remains democratic, but the practice becomes feudal. The citizen is reduced to a spectator. The party member becomes a prop. The aspirant becomes dependent on patronage rather than persuasion.

The consequence is not merely political unfairness; it is bad governance. A candidate imposed through elite arrangements enters office with debts not owed primarily to citizens. His first loyalty is often to those who installed him. Public office then becomes a platform for repayment. Appointments, contracts, access, protection, and silence become the currency of political settlement. Citizens later wonder why leaders appear distant from their needs. Often, the answer lies in how such leaders emerged.

Defenders of imposed consensus argue that open primaries are chaotic, expensive, and divisive. They point to vote-buying, intimidation, litigation, and factional conflict. These concerns are real. But the answer to a flawed democratic process cannot be the abolition of democratic choice. If primaries are corrupt, reform them. If delegates are compromised, make the process more transparent. If disputes are endless, strengthen internal party institutions. To eliminate competition because competition is messy is to confuse control with legitimacy.

False unity is not stability. It is merely a postponed conflict. Those denied a voice may smile in public, but grievance does not vanish. It returns as sabotage, apathy, defections, court cases, and distrust. A fair contest may wound egos, but it gives losers a reason to accept defeat. An imposed candidate gives the excluded a reason to seek revenge. Political peace manufactured by force is usually temporary; legitimacy earned through participation lasts longer.

The greater danger is cultural. Once party members learn that outcomes are decided by an inner circle, politics loses its democratic soul. People stop asking who has the best ideas and start asking who has been anointed. They stop organising around programmes and begin clustering around patrons. Conviction becomes risky. Independence becomes punishable. Silence becomes strategic. Over time, democracy becomes a performance: loud rallies, colourful posters, scripted endorsements, and empty participation.

Nigeria must stop treating candidate selection as a private affair of political parties. Parties are not ordinary clubs. They are gatekeepers of public leadership. Their internal processes shape the quality of governors, lawmakers, presidents, and councillors. When parties fail internally, the nation pays externally. A democracy that tolerates dictatorship inside parties cannot produce accountability in government.

The test is simple. Were aspirants free to contest or withdraw? Were members genuinely consulted? Was dissent permitted? Was the process transparent? Were delegates respected as decision-makers or managed as instruments? Where the answer is no, consensus becomes a lie.

A civilian coup does not always suspend the constitution. Sometimes it operates through party secretariats, governors’ lodges, hotel rooms, and private homes. It preserves the rituals of democracy but strips away its essence. That is the tragedy of elite capture. It does not merely weaken democracy; it normalises democracy without choice, unity without consent, and leadership without legitimacy.

When power circulates only among the initiated, democracy is no longer alive. It has simply been embalmed for public display.

•Dr Peterside is the author of “Leading in a Storm” and “Beneath the Surface”.

The post Elite capture and death of democracy, by Dakuku Peterside appeared first on Vanguard News.

,

Democracy does not always die with the sound of boots, bullets, or decrees.
