{"id":9602,"date":"2025-03-24T05:43:18","date_gmt":"2025-03-24T05:43:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/edumarkng.com\/news\/stock-market-volatility-persists-records-4th-consecutive-week-downturn\/"},"modified":"2025-03-24T05:43:18","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T05:43:18","slug":"stock-market-volatility-persists-records-4th-consecutive-week-downturn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/edumarkng.com\/news\/stock-market-volatility-persists-records-4th-consecutive-week-downturn\/","title":{"rendered":"Stock market volatility persists, records 4th consecutive week downturn\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanguardngr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Nigeria-Stock-Exchange.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Stock market volatility persists, records 4th consecutive week downturn\u00a0\" title=\"Stock market volatility persists, records 4th consecutive week downturn\u00a0\" \/><\/div><p>Stock market volatility persists, records 4th consecutive week downturn\u00a0, <\/p>\n<p>By Peter Egwuatu<\/p>\n<p>The volatility in the Nigerian\u00a0stock market continued last week with market recording a fourth consecutive week downturn following losses recorded by highly capitalised stocks across the sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts have emphasised that the volatility experienced last week were compounded by the\u00a0 \u00a0 global economic uncertainties, coupled with the political upheaval in Rivers State which had continued to put pressure on the stock <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanguardngr.com\/tag\/debt-stock\/\">market<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meeanwhile, analysis of trading last week showed that\u00a0 BUA Cement\u2019s stock price declined by -10.0% followed by Transcorp\u00a0 \u00a0-7.8% and GTCO losing -4.6% to drive the Nigerian Exchange Limited , NGX , All-Share Index (ASI) lower by 0.9%\u00a0 \u00a0Week on Week, W\/W to close on Friday at 104,962.96 points from 105,955.13 points the previous week.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the Month-to-Date and Year-to-Date returns moderated to -2.7% and +2.0%, respectively.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trading activity mirrored the broader market sentiment, as both volume and value fell by 12.1% W\/W and 25.3% W\/W respectively.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, sectoral performance was predominantly negative, with the Industrial Goods Index declining\u00a0 by -3.4%, Insurance Index\u00a0 \u00a0-2.9% , Banking Index -2.6%, and Oil &amp; Gas -1.1% , while the Consumer Goods Index up by 0.1%<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on market outlook, analysts at Cordros Research stated: \u201cIn the coming week, we anticipate continued market volatility as investors analyse a slew of audited earnings reports and associated dividend announcements set to be released during the week\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on market performance, analysts at InvestData Consulting Limited, said: \u201cThe global economic uncertainty and other local concerns in the events that are unfolding in Rivers State are affecting investor confidence, which had continued to put pressure on the stock market, even with rates in the fixed income market inched higher.
