Over 150 staff members of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) were honoured with distinguished service awards in recognition of their outstanding performance and contribution to the institution’s development.

The award ceremony, held at the Yusuf Grillo Auditorium, marked the first distinguished service lecture and staff awards of the college.

Teaching and non-teaching staff across all departments and cadres received accolades for demonstrating exceptional commitment, innovation, and integrity in their respective roles throughout the 2024 academic year.

In his remarks, the Rector, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, emphasised the importance of rewarding excellence, noting that the initiative was aimed at institutionalising leadership and fostering a culture of integrity within the college.

“Let this event ignite a renewed commitment to service, not just to our professional roles, but the greater good of our communities and our nation,” he stated.

Highlighting the categories of awards, Abdul revealed that the best overall staff of various schools and units were presented with plaques and ₦200,000 each, while winners in other categories received ₦50,000. He reiterated that the awards reflect the institution’s dedication to academic and administrative excellence.

Chief Babatunde Fanimokun, Chairman of the Distinguished Service Excellence (DSE) Foundation, delivered a lecture titled ‘Excellence, Integrity, Resourcefulness and Selflessness: The Hallmarks of Lagos State Public Service as a Case Study in Progress, Unity and Prosperity (1967 to 2925)’.

He commended the federal government’s decision to upgrade YABATECH to a university, describing it as a personal birthday gift and pledging support towards infrastructure development.

Fanimokun, the Agba Akin of Iru Kingdom, reflected on his longstanding relationship with the institution, citing YABATECH’s values as the reason for his continued involvement. He also paid tribute to past Lagos leaders like Brigadier Mobolaji Johnson and Alhaji Lateef Jakande, lauding their legacy of integrity and visionary governance.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, commended YABATECH for its sustained excellence in education and for producing leaders who have significantly contributed to national development.

Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Funso Isolaowa, described the awards as a moment of celebration and inspiration. “Their hard work, dedication, and exceptional achievements embody the values that make this institution great,” he said.
