How Sean Dampte is riding new wave of Afrobeats while channeling Fela’s spirit,

    By Ayo Onikoyi
Afrofusion artiste Sean Dampte is gaining attention in 2026 for his attempt to bridge contemporary Afrobeats with the ideological and musical legacy of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.

The London-based, Lagos-raised singer recently released his single “Gbera,” which he describes as marking a new phase in his career. The track focuses on themes of personal growth, spirituality and self-awareness, and serves as a lead-in to his forthcoming project, “Awoodah: Sounds of Kalakuta.”

Beyond his music releases, Dampte has also featured in conversations around the direction of Nigerian music. During recent debates involving Wizkid and Seun Kuti, he weighed in on the tension between “timeless” music and trending sounds, highlighting the foundational role of Afrobeat and the global expansion driven by modern Afrobeats stars.

Dampte’s artistic direction draws significantly from Fela’s influence, both in sound and philosophy. His earlier project, “Mo Kuti: Afrobeat Fella,” released in 2024, was conceived as a tribute to Afrobeat’s origins, combining traditional elements such as live instrumentation and message-driven storytelling with contemporary production styles.

Industry observers note that his approach reflects a broader trend among emerging artists seeking to reconnect Afrobeats with its roots. While Afrobeats has evolved into a global pop genre shaped by streaming platforms and international collaborations, some musicians are increasingly incorporating elements of Afrobeat’s original structure and social commentary.

Dampte’s “Awoodah” concept, which centres on ambition and self-actualisation, aligns with the aspirational themes common in modern Afrobeats. However, his continued references to Afrobeat’s heritage set him apart within a competitive and rapidly expanding music scene.

As conversations continue about the balance between global appeal and cultural authenticity in Nigerian music, Dampte’s work reflects an attempt to navigate both spaces—drawing from tradition while adapting to contemporary trends.

With new releases and a growing profile, the singer is positioning himself within a new generation of artists shaping the evolving sound and identity of Afrobeats.
